When God Makes Much of Himself Through Your Family
This weekend our church hosted a marriage conference with Pastor Wayne from Mississippi. On Sunday he preached from Ephesians 3:14–21, and the heart of the message was simple and huge:
👉 Your family matters deeply to God.
👉 God wants to use your ordinary family in extraordinary ways.
👉 And He’s already given you everything you need in Jesus to see that happen.
Here’s a recap of the main truths he walked us through—and some practical ways to live them out this week.
1. Your Family Matters to the Father
Paul starts his prayer like this:
“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named…” (Eph. 3:14–15)
That means:
- Family wasn’t your idea. It was God’s idea.
- Your marriage, your kids, your grandkids, your extended relatives—they’re not random.
- God cares so much about family that He sent Jesus so you and I could be adopted into His family.
Being in the family of God is a gift of sheer grace. And now God wants to use your family—right where you are—to make much of Jesus.
Live this out this week:
- Pray over your family by name. Thank God that each person carries His image and His name.
- Tell someone in your family: “You matter to God more than you know.”
- If your family feels messy, pray honestly: “Lord, this feels broken. But You say our family matters to You. Use us anyway.”
2. You’re Not Meant to Power Family Life on Your Own
Paul prays:
“…that he may grant you… to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being.” (Eph. 3:16)
Pastor Wayne used a simple picture:
A coat doesn’t move itself. It only does anything when there’s life inside it.
Same with us.
We don’t love well, lead well, or parent well in our own strength. It’s Christ in us—through the Holy Spirit—who makes the difference.
- You can’t “try harder” your way into being a godly husband, wife, dad, mom, or grandparent.
- You can learn to depend on the power of the Spirit who already lives in you.
Apart from Jesus, we can do nothing.
With Jesus living in us, He can do what we never could.
Live this out this week:
- Each morning, pray this simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, I can’t do this on my own. Be my strength as a spouse/parent today.”
- Think of one area where you’re clearly running on fumes (impatience, anger, worry, exhaustion). Name it and invite the Spirit into that exact place.
- Before a hard conversation with your spouse or kids, pause and pray out loud (even briefly) together.
3. Let Jesus Be “At Home” in Every Room
Paul continues:
“…so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith…” (Eph. 3:17)
He’s writing to Christians—so Jesus is already in their hearts.
So what’s he praying for?
That Jesus would be at home there.
Welcome. Free to move. Free to lead.
Pastor Wayne used two pictures:
- Keys – Many of us hand Jesus one key (Sunday, church life) but keep the other keys ourselves (marriage, money, habits, entertainment).
- Rooms – We tell Him, “You’re welcome here, but not in that room. I’ll handle that part.”
Jesus didn’t die and rise again to get part of you.
He wants every room. Every key. Every piece of your life and family.
Live this out this week:
- Do a “key inventory” with God. Ask honestly: “Lord, what areas of my life have I not really given You a key to?”
Common ones:- How we talk to our spouse
- What we watch or scroll
- How we handle money
- Hidden habits or bitterness
- Pray a bold surrender prayer: “Jesus, You’re welcome in every room of my life and my home. I give You all the keys.”
- If you’re married, talk together about one practical change to invite Jesus more fully into your home (praying together, changing how conflict works, creating a tech boundary, etc.).
4. Rooted and Grounded in Love
Paul prays that we would:
“…be rooted and grounded in love… to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge…” (Eph. 3:17–19)
In a culture that will constantly challenge your kids’ and grandkids’ identity, they need bedrock certainty about one thing:
They are deeply loved by God.
Not “if they behave.”
Not “if they perform.”
Not “if they impress.”
But because Jesus has already shown His love at the cross.
Wayne reminded us:
- John 3:16 love – God so loved the world that He gave.
- Romans 5:8 love – While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
- On the cross, Jesus was declaring: “I love you. You’re worth this.”
Our job as parents and grandparents is to root and ground our families in that love.
Live this out this week:
- Pick one verse about God’s love (John 3:16, Romans 5:8, 1 John 3:1) and read it out loud with your family.
- Tell your kids/grandkids specifically: “God loves you more than you can imagine, and nothing you do will make Him love you less.”
- When someone in your family fails or blows it, respond in a way that shows grace, not just frustration. Use it as a chance to model Jesus’ unconditional love.
5. Jesus Is Enough—and God Wants to Do More Than You Expect
Paul finishes with this powerful doxology:
“Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations…” (Eph. 3:20–21)
Two huge truths:
- Jesus is enough.
- You don’t need “Jesus plus something” to have a meaningful life or family.
- When you have Him, you truly “got it all.”
- God wants to do exceedingly, abundantly more in and through your family than you’ve imagined.
- More healing.
- More reconciliation.
- More impact.
- More fruit for His glory.
Not because your family is perfect.
But because He is powerful, and His Spirit lives in you.
Live this out this week:
- When you feel stuck, pray Ephesians 3:20 over your situation: “Lord, You can do far more than I can ask or imagine in this. I trust Your power, not mine.”
- Dream a little with God: “What might it look like for You to use our family to make much of Jesus—in our neighborhood, school, workplace, city?”
- Consider a simple step of availability:
- Invite someone over for dinner.
- Start praying together as a couple or family.
- Serve together in a ministry.
These aren’t small. They’re often where “exceedingly abundantly more” begins.
Two Honest Questions to End With
1️⃣ Is Jesus truly at home in your life?
Not just “in your life” in theory, but welcomed in every room? If not, today is a beautiful day to surrender.
2️⃣ Have you ever actually entered God’s family?
If you’ve never trusted Jesus—never turned from your sin and placed your faith in Him—this is where everything starts. He became your sin so you could be made right with God. You can call on Him today.
However your family looks right now—healthy, hurting, blended, scattered, young, or empty-nest—God sees you. He loves you. And He’s able to do far more than you’ve asked for yet.
This week, lean in closer.
Give Him the keys.
Let Him use your family to make much of Jesus.
