A Touch That Changes Everything

A Touch That Changes Everything

From Mark 5:24–34

Some stories in Scripture hit us right in the heart. Mark 5 is one of them. It’s emotional, raw, and painfully relatable. It’s the story of a woman who spent twelve years stuck in suffering—and the moment everything changed when she reached out and touched Jesus.

This isn’t just a story about ancient pain. It’s a story about us.

The Big Idea

When desperate people reach for Jesus in faith, He responds with compassion, identity, and healing. Jesus meets us in the mess—and His touch still transforms lives today.

Main Point 1: We All Carry Deep, Often Hidden Pain

This woman had been bleeding for 12 years.
She was:

  • Physically sick
  • Relationally isolated
  • Financially drained
  • Spiritually labeled “unclean”
  • Emotionally exhausted

She tried everything. Nothing worked. In fact, things only got worse.

We know this feeling.
The quiet anxieties. The pressure of bills. Grief that doesn’t fade. Loneliness that feels endless. Health issues that won’t let go. Job stress. Fears we don’t tell anyone.

Just like her, many of us walk into church, listen, sing, smile—and still think:
“But what’s the answer to the mess I’m living in?”

Main Point 2: Hope Begins When We Hear About Jesus

Verse 27 says, “When she heard about Jesus…”
That’s the turning point.

She heard enough to believe:
“If I can just touch Him… I’ll be healed.”

This is where faith starts—not with having perfect theology, but with taking one small step toward Jesus in hope.

There were crowds pressing around Jesus, but she wasn’t content to blend in. She fought through the noise, fear, and shame and reached out anyway.

Main Point 3: Jesus Responds Personally, Compassionately, and Powerfully

The moment she touched Him, Jesus stopped everything.

He wasn’t annoyed.
He wasn’t too busy.
He wasn’t dismissive.

Instead, He gave her:

  • Attention — He searched for her.
  • Affection — He called her “Daughter.”
  • Affirmation — “Your faith has healed you.”
  • Peace — “Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

Before this moment she was a nameless outcast.
After this moment she was seen, known, loved, and restored.

Main Point 4: The Key Is Faith—Not Perfect Faith, But Faith in the Right Person

Jesus describes different kinds of faith in Scripture:

  • No faith – “I don’t know if God can or will.”
  • Little faith – “I know He can, but I’m not sure He will.”
  • Great faith – “I know God can, and I trust that He will.”

This woman didn’t have perfect faith.
She had desperate faith.
But her faith was placed in Jesus—and that’s what made the difference.

Faith isn’t about how strong we are.
It’s about how strong He is.

Main Point 5: Jesus’ Touch Still Changes Lives

The preacher shared moments when he felt “the touch of Jesus”—as a scared child, a lonely college student, and a discouraged missionary. Every time, Jesus met him with comfort, presence, and direction.

Many of us have experienced Jesus before.
But over time, things get routine. Faith grows stale. Church becomes a checklist.

And what we really need…
is a fresh touch from Jesus.

How to Apply This Sermon This Week

1. Name the Area Where You Need Jesus’ Healing Touch

Is it stress? Fear? Sin? Loneliness? Pain? Exhaustion?
Write it down. Tell Jesus honestly—like the woman did.

2. Take One Intentional Step Toward Him

Faith looks like movement. Consider:

  • Praying honestly instead of vaguely
  • Opening Scripture even when you don’t “feel it”
  • Asking someone to pray for you
  • Returning to church after distance
  • Reaching out instead of isolating

Your step doesn’t have to be big—just real.

3. Replace “No Faith” or “Little Faith” Thoughts With Truth

When fear says: “God won’t help.”
Answer with: “My God can, and my God cares.”

When shame says: “I’m not worthy.”
Answer with: “Jesus calls me daughter/son.”

4. Make Space to Be Still With Jesus

Take 10 quiet minutes this week.
No phone. No noise.
Pray: “Jesus, I need a fresh touch from You.”

And wait.

You might be surprised how quickly He stops for you—just like He stopped for her.

5. Look for Someone Who Needs to Hear They Matter to God

The outcast.
The discouraged.
The overlooked.
The hurting.
The one who thinks they’ve messed up too much.

Be the person who says what Jesus said:
“You matter. God sees you.”

Final Thought

Jesus is never too busy, too overwhelmed, or too distant for you.
No matter how long you’ve been hurting, one touch from Him can change everything.

Reach out this week. He’ll meet you there.
