The Essentials We Must Stand On (And Why They Matter for Your Faith)
Every church has preferences, traditions, and opinions—but underneath all of that, there are essentials. These are not “agree to disagree” topics. These are not flavors, styles, or secondary doctrines.
These are the non-negotiables.
As Pastor Nick put it:
“Essentials are not things we unite over — they’re things we unite under.”
Here’s a concise breakdown of what makes an essential, why they matter, and how they shape our everyday discipleship.
1. Scripture: Our Final Authority
If we get this wrong, everything else collapses.
Scripture is:
- Inspired (from God)
- Infallible (without error)
- Authoritative (it rules over feelings, culture, and opinion)
2 Timothy 3:16 says:
“All Scripture is God-breathed…”
Not some.
Not the parts we like.
All.
We don’t determine truth—Scripture does. Our feelings don’t correct Scripture; Scripture corrects us.
Why it matters:
Every other essential flows from what God has revealed in His Word. If Scripture is optional, everything becomes optional.
2. God: The One We Worship
You cannot worship a God you do not know.
Biblically:
- There is one God
- He is eternal, holy, just, and loving
- He is revealed as Father, Son (the Word), and Holy Spirit
- This is the Trinity, and it is essential
Not “a higher power.”
Not “whatever god means to you.”
Not “the god of my feelings.”
Why it matters:
If we worship the wrong God, or a god of our own imagination, we’re not worshiping at all.
3. Humanity: Made in God’s Image, Broken by Sin
Genesis 1:27 tells us humanity is:
- Created (purposefully)
- In God’s image
- Male and female
- Valuable and eternal
But humanity is also:
- Fallen
- Sinful
- Separated from God
- In need of a Savior
This is where the cultural tension sits today—identity, gender, sexuality, dignity, truth—but Christians must not bend Scripture to match culture.
Why it matters:
If humanity isn’t fallen, salvation isn’t needed. If humanity isn’t created, purpose becomes meaningless. If humanity isn’t male/female, God’s design becomes optional.
And we speak these truths in love, not outrage—because love rejoices in truth and longs for freedom, not victory.
4. Salvation: Through Christ Alone
Acts 4:12 says:
“There is no other name under heaven… by which we must be saved.”
Not many paths.
Not “be a good person.”
Not religion, ritual, or morality.
Salvation is:
- By grace alone
- Through faith alone
- In Christ alone
And salvation includes:
- Justification — saved from the penalty of sin
- Sanctification — being saved from the power of sin
- Glorification — one day saved from the presence of sin
Why it matters:
If Jesus isn’t the only way, the cross becomes unnecessary and the gospel collapses.
5. The Ordinances: Baptism & The Lord’s Supper
Not sacraments that save you, but symbols that show your salvation.
Jesus gave two ongoing commands:
- Baptize disciples (Matthew 28:19)
- Observe the Lord’s Supper (1 Corinthians 11)
Different churches may differ on modes (immersion, frequency, grape juice vs. wine), but the essentials are:
- Jesus commanded them
- The church practices them
- They declare the gospel
Why it matters:
If we ignore what Jesus commanded, we’re not following Him—we’re merely studying Him.
6. The Church: His People, His Mission
Jesus said:
“I will build My church…” (Matthew 16:18)
The church is:
- Built on the confession that Jesus is the Christ
- Global and local
- Offensive, not defensive (the gates of hell won’t prevail)
The church is not a building, an event, or a brand—it’s a called-out people united under Christ.
Why it matters:
You cannot follow Jesus and ignore His bride.
7. The Commission: We Are Sent
Acts 1:8 gives the plan:
Jerusalem (local)
Judea (regional)
Samaria (cross-cultural)
Ends of the Earth (global)
This affects how we view change:
If a non-essential method blocks the essential mission,
then removing that method becomes essential.
We don’t idolize styles, traditions, or preferences. We use whatever tools best reach people with the unchanging gospel.
Why it matters:
A church that won’t go has already stopped being a church.
8. The Family: Designed by God
Family is not a social construct—it’s a divine design.
Scripture reveals:
- Marriage = one man + one woman
- Family = God’s discipleship engine for the next generation
- Parents are primary disciplers
- Children are image bearers
Why it matters:
If the family breaks, culture breaks. If the family is discipled, the next generation is discipled.
9. The End: Jesus Will Return
We may disagree on:
- Timing
- Sequence
- Millennium views
- Tribulation charts
But we cannot disagree on this:
Jesus is coming again.
He will judge the living and the dead.
He will make all things new.
That’s the essential.
Why it matters:
Hope isn’t a coping mechanism—it’s a future reality.
How to Live This Out This Week
If essentials stay theoretical, nothing changes. So here are simple steps:
1. Submit to Scripture
Before posting, arguing, or assuming—open your Bible.
2. Pursue the Real God
Pray:
“Lord, help me love You as You are, not as I imagine.”
3. See People Biblically
Every person you meet today is:
- Made by God
- Loved by God
- Broken by sin
- In need of grace
Treat them accordingly.
4. Share the Gospel
Not a debate—an announcement:
Jesus saves sinners.
5. Engage the Church
Show up, serve, give, belong—don’t spectate.
6. Disciple Your Household
Pray together. Open Scripture. Talk about Jesus.
7. Live Ready
Hope shouldn’t make you anxious—it should make you faithful.
Final Word
Secondary issues make us different.
Tertiary issues make us interesting.
Essentials make us unified.
We don’t plant flags in opinions.
We plant flags in truth.
Because you can’t take Jesus to the world
if you don’t agree on who He is,
what He’s said,
and why we’re here.
That’s who we are. And that’s what we’re standing on.
