Connected, Growing, Serving, Going

Who We Are & How We Live Out Our Mission

Many believers today talk about church the way we talk about restaurants or gyms—something to “try,” “consume,” or “shop for.” But biblically, church isn’t a product to consume. It’s a body you belong to… a family you contribute to… and a mission you participate in.

In this sermon, Pastor Nick reminded us why church still matters, why it’s not boring when we live it rightly, and how Scripture calls us to function together.

Here’s the heart of it.

1. First—Are You Connected to Jesus? (Ephesians 4:16)

Before we talk about church attendance, volunteering, community, or mission, we have to start with the most important question:

Am I actually connected to Jesus?

Ephesians 4:16 says the whole body is “from Him”—meaning Jesus is the source, the center, and the glue that holds everything together.

You can:
✔ Attend church for 50 years
✔ Know every Bible story
✔ Have your name on a membership roll
… and still not be saved.

Membership rolls aren’t the book of life.

If you’ve never repented of sin and trusted Christ by faith, you may be around the church but not part of the church.

Connection to Jesus comes before connection to His people.

2. When You’re Connected to Jesus, You’re Connected to His People

Ephesians 4:16 continues:

“…the whole body, joined and held together… grows as each part does its work.”

Two key truths:

A. The Body Needs You

Every limb matters.
Every ligament matters.
Every member matters.

If you’re in Christ, you don’t just “attend” church—you belong to a body.

B. The Body Doesn’t Function Without You

The enemy loves whispering:

  • “You’re not needed.”
  • “No one will miss you.”
  • “It doesn’t matter if you’re there.”

But biblically:
Your absence affects more than you.

When believers only “consume” instead of contribute, the whole body feels the limp.

3. Connected People Grow in Jesus (2 Peter 3:18)

We don’t just connect—we grow.

2 Peter 3:18 commands:

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…”

Grace = becoming more like Jesus in character
Knowledge = learning more about Jesus in truth

Both matter.

Growth doesn’t happen by accident.
It requires personal responsibility.

How People Grow:

  • Personal Bible reading + prayer
  • Faithful involvement in a Connect Group
  • Regular Sunday gathering
  • Active service (not sidelines observing)

Spiritual maturity is not:
✔ Attendance streaks
✔ Bible trivia knowledge
✔ Christian aesthetics

Spiritual maturity is:
➡ Increasing Christlikeness in how we love, obey, speak, and serve.

4. Growing People Serve for Jesus (2 Corinthians 5:20)

Once you know Him and grow in Him, you naturally begin to serve for Him.

2 Corinthians 5:20 says:

“We are ambassadors for Christ…”

Ambassadors:

  • Represent a different kingdom
  • Speak on someone else’s behalf
  • Carry someone else’s authority

That’s what service is:
Not volunteering because a church needs “help,”
but serving as Christ’s representative.

But Serving Requires Sacrifice

Serving will cost you something:
✔ Time
✔ Energy
✔ Comfort
✔ Convenience

Many say they’d die for Jesus…
but won’t serve on a Saturday.

Serving also opens you to criticism—usually from spectators not participants. But obstacles don’t disqualify you… they grow you.

5. Serving Leads to Going With Jesus (Matthew 28:18–20)

Finally, believers don’t just sit with Jesus—
they go with Jesus.

Jesus said:

“All authority… has been given to me. Therefore, go…”

“Go” is not an optional extracurricular for super-Christians—it’s the natural overflow of life with Jesus.

We go:

  • With His authority
  • In His power
  • For His mission

And we’re not alone:

“I am with you always…”

Wherever Jesus sends you—in your workplace, home, school, neighborhood—He goes with you.

So What Do We Do with This? (Application)

Here are four practical ways to live this out this week:

1. Examine Your Connection

Ask honestly:

“Am I connected to Jesus by repentance and faith?”

If not—start there.

2. Commit to Regular Presence

Choose to be present with God’s people, not distant or sporadic.

Presence builds belonging.

3. Take Ownership of Growth

Pick one habit to start this week:

✔ Read one chapter of Scripture daily
✔ Pray for 5 minutes before you touch your phone
✔ Join a Connect Group
✔ Ask someone spiritually mature to disciple you

Small habits create long-term formation.

4. Choose One Act of Service

Serve someone in Jesus’ name this week:

  • Help a neighbor
  • Volunteer at church
  • Meet a practical need
  • Encourage someone who’s discouraged

And say:

“Lord, use this to point them to You.”

Final Thought

Church becomes boring when we only consume it.
Church becomes thrilling when we contribute to it.

Because you weren’t saved to sit
you were saved to serve, grow, go, and belong.

Church isn’t a product.
It’s a people on mission.

Let’s live like it.
